Types of Braces

Braces are a popular choice and effective method for teeth straightening and bite correction. The variety of modern braces we work with offer great flexibility to treat a wide range of problems. In addition, our patients enjoy being able to partner with their orthodontist to choose the type of braces that fits best with their lifestyle and makes them most comfortable with their appearance.

Metal Braces

Orthodontists have relied on traditional metal braces to successfully straighten teeth for many years, and today's metal braces are more comfortable and effective than ever. Additionally, many of our young patients like making a fashion statement with the color choices available for their metal braces.

With metal braces, it is important that patients learn the proper techniques for cleaning their wires and brackets, and pay attention to the types of food that could damage their braces. The better care an orthodontic patient takes of his or her metal braces, the quicker treatment will go, and it will all be worth it when the braces are removed to reveal properly aligned teeth and a flawless smile.

Clear Braces

Clear braces offer orthodontic patients an alternative to the appearance of traditional metal braces, while providing the same function with a wire that effectively straightens teeth. With this treatment option, tooth-colored or clear brackets are attached with a clear glue. Many adults seeking straighter teeth and a healthier smile feel more confident with clear braces because they make orthodontic treatment much less noticeable to coworkers and friends.

Invisalign

Invisalign and Invisalign Teen have become popular choices for patients in our practice. Using Invisalign, Dr. Hudson and his staff can map out a path for your teeth to follow, and you can see how the clear aligners will move your teeth gradually to their prescribed positions. Invisalign patients wear each pair of clear aligners in their custom-made set for about two weeks at a time, while enjoying the flexibility of removing them to eat whatever food they like.

All the time we see Invisalign give our patients the smiles they deserve, without revealing to anyone else that orthodontic treatment is happening. More information about orthodontic treatment with clear aligners can be found on our Invisalign FAQ page

Lingual Braces

Lingual braces are another option for patients concerned about the appearance of traditional metal braces. With this orthodontic treatment, small brackets are attached to the back surface of your teeth, towards the center of your mouth. Because of their obscure positioning inside the mouth, lingual braces can be a little more difficult to care for than traditional braces. However, many patients consider the extra work worthwhile because the "hidden" position of lingual braces means others can't see your orthodontic treatment.

Growth Modification

We offer free orthodontic screenings to all patients starting at age 7 for one simple reason: problems with jaw growth and tooth development are best addressed while the child is still growing. We will assess your child's teeth and jaw carefully, and we will only recommend early treatment if it’s necessary.

If we find an issue with the way your child's jaw is developing, in certain cases we may recommend a growth modification appliance to correct the improper jaw growth before it gets worse.

Habit Appliances

Eliminating thumb sucking and tongue thrusting habits by age 6 is very important to allow for proper alignment of the teeth and development of the jaws. However, we understand that sometimes these habits persist in spite of the parents' best efforts, and we want you to know that we are here to help through treatment with habit appliances.

We use very gentle, comfortable habit appliances to help reverse the effects of thumb sucking and tongue thrusting on the development of your child's teeth and jaws.

Space Maintainers

Using space maintainers to prevent the teeth from crowding helps young patients to avoid the need for tooth extraction and lengthy orthodontic treatment at a later age. In cases that will benefit from this preventative orthodontic treatment method, we choose from several available types of space maintainer appliances, like the lower lingual holding arch.

Retainers

The final phase of orthodontic treatment is the most important! Retainers are recommended to be worn full-time for 6 months following the conclusion of your braces treatment, and then at night after that period. Some orthodontic patients have a long-term tendency for relapse after treatment, and your retainer is your insurance policy against relapse and the need for additional orthodontic treatment.

Depending on the individual patient's orthodontic treatment plan and needs, we may recommend one or more of a few types of retainers, such as Essix, Hawley or a fixed lingual retainer.
